Mutual association of hidradenitis suppurativa and psoriasis

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and psoriasis are chronic inflammatory diseases with similar features in their pathogenesis. In recent years, their coexistence has been observed, but the exact association between them has not been established yet.

GROUP AND METHODS: The group consisted of 426 patients, of which 92 were suffering from HS and 360 from psoriasis. Both diagnoses had 26 patients. We performed a retrospective observational study to evaluate the mutual association of HS and psoriasis. The outcomes were compared to mean prevalence rate of the diseases in Europe. The secondary endpoint was to describe the characteristics of patients with both diseases.

RESULTS: We found significantly higher prevalence of HS in the patients with psoriasis (7.2 % vs 2 %, p < 0.0001) and statistically significant higher prevalence of psoriasis in patients with HS (28.3 % vs 1 %, p < 0.0001) when compared to the mean prevalence rate of the diseases in Europe. In the group of subjects with both diagnoses, there was high rate of smoking, obesity or overweight and the dominating gender was female. The most frequent comorbidities included hypertension, dyslipoproteinemia, bronchial asthma and psychiatric comorbidities.

CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed the mutual association of HS and psoriasis. Awareness of this association could be valuable to physicians treating patients with these skin conditions (Tab. 4, Fig. 2, Ref. 21). Text in PDF www.lekarsky.herba.sk.
